Asylum Restaurant
In need of
refreshment, we found the hotel's restaurant, the Asylum, and were impressed by
the classy digs - and even more by the menu. It's the type of restaurant Jerome
has lacked. The name led us to expect a typical jeans-shorts type of deli and
pasta place. But the views were unbeatable, and the food was on par with some
of the better restaurants in Phoenix. We stayed for about five hours, enjoying
conversation and Cosmopolitans on the patio, feasting on giant crab legs,
lobster and creamy squash soup, and sampling one of the most extensive wine
lists we'd seen. "We just won the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence," said
Paula Woolsey, owner of the Asylum. The magazine named the Asylum as one of the
top restaurants in the world for wine lovers; 2,800 restaurants worldwide made
the cut.

The Liberty Theater
featured silent movies and vaudeville acts until its closing in 1929. The
downstairs was converted into the Liberty Cafe and in the 1960's was once again
changed into a retail and antique shop. The upstairs remained unchanged since
its closing in 1929. In 2003, the current owners started renovation on the
original theatre. Now open for tourists and local residents to enjoy, one of
Arizona's finest historic landmarks serves as a Cinema Museum, Gift Shop and
working theatre.

Kitchen
The
English Kitchen is the oldest continually operating restaurant in Arizona. It
was originally built in 1899 by Charley Hong, immigrant from China. Hong's
restaurant, later known as the English kitchen, was where miners, residents and
travelers could obtain good meals using cash or the popular meal tickets.
Management of the restaurant remained in Chinese hands until the last Oriental
manager, Yee Hong Song, left Jerome for health reasons in the late 1960's. The
restaurant was then occupied as a pizza parlor specializing in opera music for
the enjoyment of the customers. Today, the present owners, Tim and Jayne Toth,
want you to enjoy your meal and your visit to historic Jerome!.
