Jerome, Arizona Yaquis Indians

Why the Yaquis are Fighters

Jerome Mining News February 24, 1906

The Yaquis are still fighting. Mining operations for miles in the vicinity of San Marcial, Sonora and in the Yaqui Matape and Sonora river valleys have been completely paralyzed by the warring Indians, says Clyde H. Travenner in the Bisbee Review.

The Yaquis (Ya-kees) are daily becoming more desperate, killing Mexicans and Americans alike, according to Carlos Johnson, a wealthy and influential citizen of Sonora. When the last Yaqui war began no attempt was made to harm Americans.

When the Yaquis have no war on - which has not been for any considerable period in the last 400 years - they are said to be “a peaceful and industrial race,” depending on their sustenance. But now that they are on the warpath, they live on what they can steal from ranchers and passing provision trains.

They are familiar with he rugged mountain country of the Sierra Madres. Their fleet-footed horses can carry them through the rocky wilderness almost as fast as the Mexican soldier can speed over the desert.
